Test 1 — Try the charger directly on the console
Plug the official Nintendo charger straight into the Switch (skip the dock). Wait 30 seconds.
- Charging icon appears → the port works. Skip to Test 2 (dock test).
- Nothing happens → wiggle the cable gently in the port. If it only charges at a certain angle, the port is worn out and needs replacement.
- Still nothing on any angle → try a different USB-C cable AND a different power brick before assuming the port.
Test 2 — Try the dock
If Test 1 worked, dock the Switch and see if it charges + outputs to TV.
- No charging in the dock + no TV output → it's the dock (or the cable inside the dock), not the console.
- Charges in the dock but no TV → that's an HDMI / video issue on the dock side, not a charge issue.
- Sometimes a third-party dock has bent the console's USB-C port. If that's happened, the port needs replacement even though it currently appears to work.
Test 3 — Check the port visually
Flashlight into the console's USB-C port. You're looking for: lint or debris packed inside, bent or pushed-down center tongue, or a port that wobbles when you plug something in.
- Lint / debris → carefully clear with a wooden toothpick (never metal).
- Bent / wobbly center tongue → port replacement.
- Port looks fine but Switch still won't charge → could be the M92T36 charging IC, which is a board-level repair.
Test 4 — Is the battery just dead-dead?
If the Switch has been off and dead for months, the battery can drain below the level needed to start the charge circuit. Plug in the official charger and leave it for 30 minutes untouched — sometimes it comes back to life. If not, it's a real hardware issue.
Common Switch charge problems and what they mean
- Only charges at a certain angle → port replacement.
- Won't charge anywhere, including official charger → port, charging IC, or battery.
- Charges fine but won't dock → the dock, not the Switch.
- Third-party dock damaged the port → port replacement; we see this constantly.

FAQ
Are third-party Switch docks really that bad?
They're the #1 cause of damaged USB-C ports we see. The pin layout is slightly off-spec on many of them, which slowly bends the connector inside the console.
How long does a Switch charge port repair take?
Typically 1–3 business days. The port itself is soldered to a small daughterboard, which we either re-solder or swap out.
Will I lose my game saves?
No. Charge port repair is a hardware fix — your save data, eShop account, and downloaded games are not touched.
